THE CIVIL CEREMONY

A civil ceremony involves the bride and groom making a standard set of promises to one another. The words are read by the superintendent registrar before you repeat them to your partner, word for word, and without alteration.

You cannot change these words but you can add to them as long as your additions are not religious. Wedding rings are exchanged after the vows, although this is not a legal requirement.

You and your partner and two witnesses will then sign the marriage register. Check your details are correct before you each sign.

A civil ceremony can give you more flexibility for your wedding ceremony in terms of your choice of music, vows and readings, as long as they hold no religious content. Inform your superintendent registrar of your plans for your ceremony before your wedding day allowing them to accommodate your wishes so the ceremony to run as smoothly as possible.

FREE TO GET MARRIED?

You can marry or register a civil partnership if are both over 18 and free to marry (single, widowed or divorced). If you are aged 16 or 17 you will require parental consent to get married.

If you've been married or in a civil partnership before, you will need to provide evidence of your divorce decree absolute or final order of civil partnership dissolution. If you have been widowed you will need to provide a death certificate for your former partner.

GIVING NOTICE

You both need to give notice of your intent to marry in person to the Superintendent Registrar at your local register office(s). You must be able to provide evidence that you have lived in the district for at least 7 days. This might be a bill from the hotel you've been staying in or a letter from family or friends.

You'll also need to provide evidence of your name, date of birth and your nationality, so take your passport or birth certificate along with you.

If you are subject to immigration control, contact the British High Commission for further information.

Your notice of intent to marry will be displayed in the register office. You must wait 15 clear days after giving notice before your marriage can take place, although administratively this process usually takes about 6 weeks. You have one year to hold your wedding ceremony from the date you have given notice. You do not have to get married in the district where you have given notice.
