DOWN THE AISLE

TELL US ABOUT YOUR WEDDING DAY

We love Whitehaven and the surrounding area. It is beautiful and has lots to offer but gets overlooked being near the Lakes. We got married at Moresy Hall, Whitehaven. We fell in love with the beautiful building and walled garden. Jane and David Saxon were very welcoming and helpful. They know exactly how to look after a bride and took care to make sure our day went smoothly, no matter what. Then Seacote St Bees for the evening reception.

I bought my dress 18 months earlier at a designer day at Dresses and Dreams and just fell in love with it. My sister hand made me bespoke underwear and a pearl and crystal beaded bag to match. I got bridesmaids dresses in a sale at Laura Ashley. Flowers chosen, invitations, ordered and sent. My mum was going to do the cake and decorate the evening venue. Planning was going well but in June my dad had a stroke. My wonderful husband did the rest of the planning, choosing suits, music, transport and someone to decorate the evening venue, working on the little details.

My dad worked really hard in therapy to be able to walk me down the aisle and to be able to write his speech, he was doing well. A week before the wedding he got really sick and couldn't get out of bed or leave the hospital, he wouldn't let us cancel! We didnt know if he was going to be able to make it at all until he showed up with my mum an hour before the wedding! Once he arrived, I relaxed, put my dress on and could enjoy the day properly.

My Dad walked me down the aisle, with 36 of our closest friends and family watching. Our two year old son James was the ring bearer, our three sisters were the bridesmaids. We had a beautiful service with the afternoon sunshine pouring in. We choose our own music and readings. It was perfect and really personal. My closest friends travelled from Barcelona and Bermuda to share our day.

We had drinks in the garden and played lawn games before a 3 course meal. A classic coach from Cumbrian Classic Coaches picked us all up to take us to The Seacote. We had pictures taken on St Bees beach while guests got Hartley's ice cream while they waited. We had a buffet and party for 120. We hired John Penn, from Carlisle, as live entertainment and he was fantastic.

My dad being with us made it perfect for us

Wedding Decor did the decorations and Floral Design did the flowers (both from Workington). I had silk bouquets so i could keep these, they look real, were lighter and still look beautiful now! Anne of Holly Annes cakes of Parton made us two beautiful cakes, a cup cake tower for the day and a three teired hart shaped cake decorated with pink sugar roses for the evening.

THE BEST BITS OF THE DAY

Walking down the aisle, seeing everyone there just for us, stealing off for some time together during the pictures, the first kiss after the service, the journey on the coach with everyone and the first dance.

THINGS THAT WENT WRONG

My sister forgot the guest book (and I didn't notice). We forgot the mothers gifts for during the speeches (they got them afterwards), we forgot the confetti, we didn't cut the second cake, our son wouldn't keep his pants on! It didn't matter, no one cared and the day was still perfect.

OUR THANKS TO:

All the staff on the stroke unit West Cumberland hospital, Jane and David Saxon of Moresby Hall and our mother's Susan Watson and Yvonne Murray.

ADVICE FOR BRIDES-TO-BE

Share the planning, its both of your day. Don't stress the details too much. My dad being with us and making it, my family and friends being there to share our day made it perfect for us.

Also be careful when choosing a venue, it may be beautiful, but the time and effort, special attention to detail and care you get from the venue before and on the day make a huge difference.

Having the hair dresser and beautician come to you in the morning is also a massive help. Anything that makes it easier for you on the day is great, don't underestimate how stressed and nervous you will be and how little time you actually have.
