GOOD LUCK FOR THE BRIDE

This custom dating back to Victorian times is still popular with brides today. The full version of the rhyme goes as follows...

Something old, something new,
Something borrowed, something blue
And a silver sixpence in her shoe.

A bride incorporates each of these items into her wedding outfit for good luck. The bride chooses her own items and each item carries its own special personal meaning.

SOMETHING OLD

'Something old' is traditionally a piece of jewellery or lace which has been handed down from mother or grandmother to the bride. The item represents continuity of female line and brings good luck to the bride for a long and happy marriage.

SOMETHING NEW

'Something new' represents the new union of bride and groom. Carrying something new brings the bride luck for the future in her new married life. The item chosen must be new to the bride and is therefore often a gift of a cherished item given to the bride by a friend or family member.

SOMETHING BORROWED

'Something borrowed' must be returned to the lender after the wedding. Traditionally, a happily married woman will lend the something borrowed and through this item her good fortune will be shared with the bride. Something borrowed can also be seen as a symbol that the bride's friends and family will lend a hand and support the bride throughout her married life.

SOMETHING BLUE

'Something blue' traditionally represents loyalty and faith in marriage. Blue is associated with the sky and so symbolizes new beginnings, new horizons and the freedom of the skies within the union of marriage.
