WEDDING STATIONERY

MATCH THE THEME OF YOUR WEDDING

Plan your wedding stationery so the design follows through from beginning to end, from save-the-date to thank you cards. The theme you choose for your stationery should match your personalities and the style chosen for your wedding day. Here are some examples for themes:

Formal and sophisticated Chic and elegant designs, quality card, white or champagne, plate-sunk emboss, traditional calligraphy fonts, black gold or silver text, hand-tied ribbon to match...

Relaxed and informal Bold and bright designs, include a sketch cartoon or photograph, modern funky texts, colours to match bridesmaid ribbons and venue decor...

Garden and outdoors Handmade and natural designs, recycled card, daisy chains or wild flowers, colours to match the season...

Flamboyant or theatrical Design to impress, bold statements, colourful or textured with layers, feathers or lace, opulence and individual flair...

A number of factors will influence your designs such as your chosen venue, the colours and textures of the dresses and suits and the time of the year you are getting married. Above all your theme and stationery to match should reflect your personalities.

FORMAL INVITATION TO FOLLOW...

Save-the-Date cards are an early notification to ensure guests have your wedding day marked in their diaries and calendars as early as possible. Save-the-Date cards can be sent out as soon as the Church, Registrar and Venue bookings have been confirmed. They can help to avoid guests from double-booking on your big day. So the key is to send out your Save-the-Date cards as early as possible.

All Save-the-Date cards need to include who's getting married and the date of the wedding. At this stage, you probably won't have all the arrival times etc confirmed, and besides, such details will be included in the wedding invitations. So you can choose to keep it simple.

Save-the-date cards are a relatively modern invention. There are no formal rules or etiquette to consider. You could include a photograph of yourselves with a quirky little poem. A Lake District map sketch or photograph can give your guests a early clue to your wedding destination. Alternatives to cards are available such as save-the-date fridge magnets and save-the-date credit cards or save-the-date mint tins.

The words "Formal invitation to follow" make a very helpful addition to your save-the-date cards, ensuring your guests know there will be more information to follow.

REPLY CARDS & ENVELOPES

Wedding invitations are usually sent out 2-3 months before your special day. Invitations to very formal weddings will adhere to traditional etiquette including the following rules:

The hosts (traditionally the bride's parents) invite the guests to the wedding. The traditional wording for a religious ceremony is "request the honor of your presence" while the wording for civil wedding ceremonies is "request the pleasure of your company"

When writing names and titles, do not use any abbreviations. Write all names in full including middle names where known. Dates and times should be written out as text in full.

More frequently today, the bride and groom will host their own wedding and they should therefore send the invitations from themselves (beginning with "Together with their families"... where appropriate). You might choose to send with the invitations further information for your guests.

Menu Cards can be sent out with the invitations for the guests to decide on their choice for the wedding meal and asking for details of any special dietary requirements. This information will be required by your venue and/or caterers in advance of the event.

Maps & Directions can be helpful for guests who will be traveling to your celebrations.

Evening Invitations Mr and Mrs ..... request the pleasure of the company of (guest's name) at an evening reception to celebrate the marriage of their daughter (name) with (groom's name) at...

RSVP Traditionally the address of the Bride's parents would appear at the foot of the invitation and guests would reply in writing. However RSVP cards a very popular and can include a pre-addressed and stamped reply envelope make it easy for a guest to respond to your invitation.

THE DAY'S PROCEEDINGS

A printed "Order of the Day" card is a helpful way of letting your guests know the expected flow of the day. Order of the Day cards are generally given out to guests on their arrival at the ceremony. Key moments in the day's proceedings are listed and might include the following for example...

VOWS, READINGS, HYMNS...

Order of Service Cards give a list of the proceedings for the marriage ceremony. They are traditionally used in religious ceremonies but are also very popular in civil ceremonies today. The design can be anything from a simple list to a detailed description of the service including readings and lyrics. Opposite is an example of an Order of Service card.

You might like to include your Wedding Vows, Poems & Reading, etc. Order of Service cards are kept as mementos of your marriage by friends and family, and are often passed down to children and grandchildren. Your ceremony will reflect your personalities and your love for one another. Your Order of Service cards will become part of the record of your marriage for future generations.

Note: Permission from the copyright holder will be required to re-print the lyrics of your chosen hymns

SEATING PLANS TO MATCH

Match your table stationery following the theme of your invitations, order of the day, order of service, menus and maps. Plan early and have all your stationery printed at the same time. Read about Seating Plans before allocating guests to seats at your wedding reception.

Table Plan For guests to find their tables, a table plan will be located at the entrance to the dining room

Table Names/Numbers Each table should be numbered or given a quirky name which matches the theme of the wedding. These Table Names/Numbers should be clearly visible from across the room.

Place Setting Cards Usually a simple folded card with the guests name, either printed or hand written, to indicate where each guest is to sit around the table.

Menu The food served is an important part of the days enjoyment and your menu will likely be a talking point around each table. Although you will have sent a menu out with the invitations, it is a good idea to have at least one menu around each table.
